The story of Alpha Grissin: from Ukraine to Greece

The story of how the son of a Ukrainian officer from Kharkiv created an international company with a multimillion-dollar turnover and how it entered the Ukrainian market almost 100 years later.

Some people have the gift of anticipating future market needs and investing in the right area at the right time. Most believe that their intuition helps them to do this, while others believe that the main component of success is the desire to take risks and follow innovations and new trends. In fact, you also need talent to see the prospects and invest at the right time.

Vassilis Grissin is such an innovator. His masterful anticipation of future market needs has been the result of his success in his professional career. Vassilis started out in the automotive business, which brought him significant revenues, continued in the air conditioning market, which strengthened his position as a successful businessman, and continues in the data centre infrastructure sector.

Talent and luck are given to people at birth. Mr Grissin's father, Oleksiy Grishin, was a Ukrainian who lived in Kharkiv and served as an officer in the army. He had a large family - 5 brothers. Unfortunately, they all died during the October Revolution of 1917. Oleksii managed to immigrate to Greece. Here he met his future wife Marianna, who came to Athens from Crete in search of work. They raised two sons, Antonis and Vassilis. It is worth noting that Vassilis was named after Alexei's older brother, Vasily Grishin, who died during the bloody events of 1917.
Vassilis' childhood years were spent in a daily struggle for existence. At a young age, he lost his father and was forced to take responsibility for the family, starting to work at the age of 12.

Vassilis' first and official job was at a petrol station in Athens, where he serviced cars. After gaining his first experience, Vassilis started working for the automotive distribution company KAMENOS in the centre of Athens. Later, he came up with the idea of starting his own business. The demand for cars in Greece was growing, and Vassilis and his childhood friends opened their first automotive distribution company. They started as a distributor of European car brands, gradually expanding their customer base.

1979 was the start of their next investment project. The temperature in Athens was abnormal - over 40 degrees. Demand for air conditioners exceeded supply. Local companies kept minimal stocks of American air conditioners. In addition, there were also Japanese brands. Vassilis made inquiries and found out that Japanese manufacturers were producing millions of air conditioners of good quality at much lower prices. He saw this as a terrific business opportunity and subsequently achieved the status of exclusive distributor of Panasonic air conditioners in Greece.

The big success came with time - 8 years later. In 1987, the company's revenues increased 4 times. This was due to the abnormal temperature, which was over 42 degrees in summer. Before that, the company sold only 3000 air conditioners a year, and this year they sold 12000 units. Sales grew every year as air conditioning became a necessary attribute in every Greek home.

The beginning of the 80s of the last century was a new stage in the history of Vassilis Grissin's success. He decided to sell his car distribution business and invest in promising markets. And Vassilis was lucky.

The computer systems support market was just emerging at the time. So Vassilis decided to try his hand at it. The company began to develop and maintain facilities that housed complex electronic devices that had to function under any conditions. In Greece, Grissin became a pioneer in this field. The first customers were the State University and the National Oil Company of Greece. In the late 80s, absolutely all Greek banks were clients of Vassilis Grissin's company.

The economic crisis of 2008 certainly affected all areas of the company's business. However, Vassilis Grissin is not one to stay in one place and meekly wait for things to change for the better. He had to move on and look for new promising markets. The idea for the next investment project came from VERTIV (then EMERSON NETWORK POWER), with which ALPHA GRISSIN has been cooperating for almost 40 years. In February 2010, ALPHA GRISSIN INFOTECH UKRAINE was founded to officially represent VERTIV on the Ukrainian market.

Vasillis' business is continued by his son, Alyosha. The company expands its business in the Central Asian region. An office was opened in Uzbekistan in 2023 and in Kazakhstan in 2025.

Vertiv Avocent MergePoint Unity 2: KVM switch for secure remote access in IT infrastructure management

In distributed IT environments with central data centers, edge locations, branches, and remote servers, it is critical to ensure rapid response to incidents and minimize physical visits to sites. This is especially true for operations performed at the pre-boot stage or when in-band management is unavailable. For such scenarios, Vertiv has expanded its portfolio of remote management solutions with the introduction of Avocent MergePoint Unity 2 (MPU2) KVM switches for secure out-of-band access in enterprise and edge data centers.

AI load in data centers: new aspects of uninterruptible power supply system development

The introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms significantly changes the energy consumption profile in data centers. Unlike traditional computing processes, AI loads are characterized by high amplitude transients (instantaneous jumps in electrical current parameters): energy consumption can vary from 10% to 130% in milliseconds. Such impulse loads pose risks to the frequency stability and thermal state of power electronics.
