Vertiv Avocent MergePoint Unity 2: KVM switch for secure remote access in IT infrastructure management

In distributed IT environments with central data centers, edge locations, branches, and remote servers, it is critical to ensure rapid response to incidents and minimize physical visits to sites. This is especially true for operations performed at the pre-boot stage or when in-band management is unavailable. For such scenarios, Vertiv has expanded its portfolio of remote management solutions with the introduction of Avocent MergePoint Unity 2 (MPU2) KVM switches for secure out-of-band access in enterprise and edge data centers.

Vertiv Avocent MergePoint Unity 2 Review

Vertiv Avocent MergePoint Unity 2 is not just another KVM switch, but a tool for scenarios where remote access to infrastructure must work not “under ideal conditions,” but precisely when something has already gone wrong. The MPU2 line is aimed at enterprise, edge, and branch environments where it is important to quickly access a server, network equipment, or other device without physically going to the site. Vertiv positions this series as the fifth generation of KVM over IP with a focus on secure remote access, centralized administration, and reducing the number of onsite interventions.

The main strength of MergePoint Unity 2 is that it covers the most “unpleasant” infrastructure tasks: access to the system at the UEFI/BIOS stage, working outside the OS, recovery after failures, remote updates, and basic diagnostics when conventional in-band tools no longer help. In this sense, the product appears practical rather than decorative: it provides an out-of-band level of control that significantly reduces MTTR in distributed IT environments. Vertiv also emphasizes that the platform helps consolidate administration tools into a single interface, which is especially useful for small IT teams that support many remote locations.

From a technical standpoint, MergePoint Unity 2 looks quite comprehensive. The series is available in 8, 16, and 32-port configurations, and individual models support 1 to 4 simultaneous remote sessions. VGA, DVI-I, DisplayPort, and HDMI video interfaces are supported, and the maximum local and remote resolution is stated as 1920×1080 with 24-bit color. This is sufficient for most administration tasks, although for modern environments with an emphasis on highly detailed graphics, this is no longer a record-breaking figure. In other words, it is more than adequate for server management, BIOS, installations, and service operations, but it does not provide sufficient headroom for demanding visual scenarios.

The model's security profile is worth mentioning separately. The lineup includes Secure Boot, Vertiv-signed keys, TLS 1.3, HTML5 Viewer support without Java, as well as FIPS 140-2 and external authentication mechanisms via TACACS+, RADIUS, and LDAP. This is important for the corporate environment, because here KVM no longer looks like an “admin utility” but becomes a full-fledged element of a managed and controlled access infrastructure. And this is probably one of the key reasons why MPU2 looks more relevant than older KVM solutions, which still rely on outdated access mechanisms.

Practical advantages include a 1U form factor, two network ports, dual internal power supplies, and compatibility with current MPU modules, which simplifies integration into existing infrastructure. This is a good sign for companies that do not want to build everything from scratch but are looking for a logical upgrade to their existing remote access scheme. Vertiv also directly emphasizes scenarios for remote firmware updates, OS installation, patches, and applications via virtual media, meaning that the product is aimed not only at “viewing the console” but also at full-fledged service operations.

As a result, Vertiv Avocent MergePoint Unity 2 comes across as a mature tool for those who need not just KVM, but a stable and secure remote infrastructure management circuit. This solution looks good in enterprise and edge scenarios, in branches, remote servers, and facilities where the physical presence of an engineer is expensive, slow, or undesirable. Its value lies not in “wow features” but in the fact that it solves a very specific operational problem: it provides access to the system when normal access no longer works.

AI load in data centers: new aspects of uninterruptible power supply system development

The introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms significantly changes the energy consumption profile in data centers. Unlike traditional computing processes, AI loads are characterized by high amplitude transients (instantaneous jumps in electrical current parameters): energy consumption can vary from 10% to 130% in milliseconds. Such impulse loads pose risks to the frequency stability and thermal state of power electronics.
