Story of Alpha Grissin: from Ukraine to Greece
The story of how the son of a Ukrainian officer from Kharkiv created an international company with multimillion-dollar turnover and its entry into the Ukrainian market almost 100 years later
Some people have the gift of predicting the future and seeing hidden market needs. Most believe that luck helps them, while others think that the main component of success is the willingness to take risks and follow innovations and new trends. In reality, it also requires talent to see the potential and invest in the right industry at the right time.
Throughout his professional career, Vassilis Grissin had the ability to virtuously foresee the future needs of customers. How did he, the son of a Ukrainian officer, manage to create a multimillion-dollar company?
He repeatedly performed this magical trick of predicting the future—starting with the automobile business, which brought him fame, continuing in the air conditioning market, which cemented his position as a successful businessman, and moving forward in the field of data center infrastructure, development business, and investments in renewable energy sources.
Talent is given to a person at birth. Mr. Grissin's father, Oleksiy Gryshyn, was a Ukrainian who lived in Kharkiv and served as an officer in the army. He had five brothers, all of whom died during the October Revolution of 1917. Oleksiy managed to immigrate to Greece. There, he met his future wife Mariana, a young Cretan girl who had moved to Athens in search of work and worked as a saleswoman. They met by chance in the store where Mariana worked. Oleksiy fell in love instantly. They raised two sons—Antonis and Vassilis. Interestingly, Vassilis was named after Oleksiy's elder brother, Vasyl Gryshyn, who died during the bloody events of 1917.
Vassilis's childhood was not easy. Every day was a struggle for existence. At a young age, he lost his father and had to take responsibility for the family, starting to work at the age of 12.
His first official job was at a gas station, where he serviced some of the few cars in Athens at the time. Gaining his first experience, Vassilis began working at the car distribution company "KAMENOS" in the center of Athens. Seeing the growing demand for cars, he and his childhood friend Spiros Machmouridis and Vassilis Pappas opened their first car distribution company. They started as distributors of European car brands, gradually expanding their customer base. In 1974, Mr. Machmouridis left the company, and the two remaining partners founded the company "GRISSIN-PAPPAS." They succeeded in becoming the exclusive distributor of Ford in Greece during the car boom of the late 70s and early 80s.
The next turning point came on a hot summer morning in 1979, when the temperature in Athens exceeded 40 degrees. To combat the heat, Vassilis Grissin decided to buy an air conditioner. This was the beginning of a significant investment project. The seller at a small electronics store confessed to Vassilis that the demand for air conditioners exceeded the supply. Companies kept minimal stocks of American air conditioners, and Japanese brands were not even represented in Greece at the time. Vassilis saw a tremendous business opportunity in this. After conducting market research, Vassilis learned that Japanese manufacturers produced millions of air conditioners at significantly lower prices. He managed to become the exclusive distributor of Panasonic air conditioners in Greece.
Great success did not come immediately but only after 8 years. The summer of 1987 was particularly hot, with temperatures exceeding 42 degrees. Until that year, the company sold only about 3,000 air conditioners annually, but this time they sold 12,000 units. After such tremendous success, many tried to enter the household air conditioner market—the number of companies in the market increased from 5 to over 100. Sales grew every year as air conditioners became a necessity in every Greek home. The peak of sales was in the late 90s when the company GRISSIN-PAPPAS sold over 60,000 air conditioners annually. Today, the company's market share in this segment is 8%.
A new chapter in Vassilis Grissin's success story began in the early 1980s when he decided to sell the car distribution business that made him famous and invest in something new.
Vassilis decided to try his hand in the emerging market of computer systems support. The company took on the development and maintenance of facilities housing complex electronic devices that needed to function under any conditions. In Greece, Grissin became a pioneer in this field. Initially, there were very few customers. Among the first were the State University and the National Oil Company of Greece. By the late 80s, virtually all Greek banks were clients of Vassilis Grissin's company, then called ALPHA SA. Today, the company is the largest distributor of VERTIV in Southeastern Europe in the field of precision air conditioning and uninterruptible power systems.
In 2000, the company received a new name—ALPHA GRISSIN Infotech SA. Greece joined the EU, which opened even greater business development opportunities. In 2004, the company went public on the Athens Stock Exchange, raising 3 million euros in investments. International expansion began with Bulgaria in 2004, continued with the development business in Poland, and a partnership with Deutsche Bank in 2006, resulting in the founding of Deutsche Aeolia, which raised 210 million euros to create wind farms in southeastern Greece.
In 2007, the turnover of ALPHA GRISSIN INFOTECH SA was 18.4 million euros.
The crisis undoubtedly affected all the company's business areas. But it is against Vassilis Grissin's nature to stay in one place and patiently wait for better times. He had to move forward and seek new promising markets.
The idea for the next investment project was suggested by VERTIV, with whom the company had been cooperating for over 30 years. ALPHA GRISSIN was invited to start developing the Ukrainian market together, leading to the founding of ALPHA GRISSIN Infotech Ukraine. At that time, EMERSON NETWORK POWER saw a niche and proposed to their long-time partner ALPHA GRISSIN to fill it. In February 2010, ALPHA GRISSIN Infotech Ukraine was founded, officially representing VERTIV's revolutionary products and services in the Ukrainian market.
What lies ahead for the company? Who can confidently predict it? One thing is certain — Mr. Grissin has a unique gift for predicting and foreseeing market needs for years to come. This quality helped him create an international company from scratch and become one of the most successful Greek businessmen.
