Features of implementing pre-terminated cable solutions in data centres
The H.D.S. (High Density System) system is an original development of the German company ZVK GmbH, which specialises in the production of components for structured cabling systems under the EasyLan® and d.centre® brands.
The system consists of two main elements: factory-terminated cable assemblies with 6-port switching modules (copper RJ45 and optical LC Duplex) and a 19’ 1U patch panel for up to 8 modules. Thus, the H.D.S. installation density is 48 ports per 1U (RJ-45 and/or LC Duplex). The range also includes modules with MTP (Multi-Fiber Termination Push-on) connectors.
A distinctive feature of H.D.S. cable assemblies is the very compact size of the module (53x26 mm), which easily fits into any cable entry in the cabinet, and the LED tracing function. The copper and optical modules have integrated LEDs connected by additional copper conductors in the cable. This feature enables visual identification of ports with a special battery-powered detector.
The shielded cable assemblies with six RJ-45 ports are pre-assembled with 24-pair cable and meet the requirements for Cat 6a of the international standard for structured cabling systems ISO 11801, which guarantees data rates of up to 10G. The maximum length of a permanent link of up to 90m can be realised on 23AWG cable. However, in data centres where the length of a permanent link often does not exceed 60m, the use of a 26AWG stranded cable is more appropriate, as it reduces the cable diameter to 13.9mm (6 U/FTP AWG 23 Cat.6A ISO/IEC cables combined into a bundle have a diameter of 30 to 36mm), which saves up to 50% of space in cable trays and cabinets compared to conventional 4-pair cables.
The 6LCD fibre optic cable assemblies are available to order with OS2/OM3/OM4/OM5 fibres, with a cable diameter of 5 mm. The cable also contains two thin copper conductors for LED tracing. It is becoming more and more common to use 6 LC Duplex - MTP modules, inside which 12 fibres from the front LC connectors are mounted on MTP connectors on the back of the module. This solution provides maximum flexibility, although LED tracing is not possible.
Advantages of using the H.D.S. EASYLAN system:
1. High connection density: 48 RJ-45 and/or LCD ports in 1U with the ability to combine optical and copper ports (24+24) in one panel. In many cases, a single panel in a server cabinet will be enough.
2. Modularity and scalability: The modular design of the H.D.S. system makes it easy to adapt to changing needs. When expanding your infrastructure, you can easily add new modules or devices. It is also possible to move the cabling infrastructure to another location.
3. Fast and convenient installation: Pre-terminated solutions do not require skilled installers to terminate copper connectors, weld fibres and perform thorough testing. This reduces the cost and time of SCS installation by an order of magnitude.
4. Significant space saving in cable trays and racks for copper lines.
5. Unique function of LED line tracing: LED line tracing helps to visually track and identify cables in complex and densely organised infrastructures, which increases maintenance efficiency and reduces the time to localise problems.
6. Compatibility and integration: The H.D.S. system can be integrated with other network and cabling solutions that use LC-MTP cassettes with universal polarity. For example, if you have a large number of optical ports, you can use the ZVK MONA crossover (72 ports in 1U) in the switching centre and the H.D.S. in the server cabinets.
7. Convenient cross-connect configuration when using cable assemblies with the H.D.S. module on one side and cables with RJ-45 or LCD connectors on the other side to connect to switch ports.
The H.D.S. system is successfully used in many data centres in Europe and Ukraine.
