Cummins and the future of hydrogen energy
Cummins Inc. is one of the leaders in the development of hydrogen technologies that is actively transforming the global energy sector. The company invests in the production of green hydrogen, creates H2-ICE hydrogen engines, fuel cells and electrolyzers, and implements environmentally friendly solutions for transportation and industry.
To make a breakthrough in the field of eco-technology, Cummins acquired Hydrogenics in 2019 as part of its New Power division. Hydrogenics has worked for 24 years to become a global leader and joined Cummins on a transformative journey of next-generation clean energy solutions. This is an important step in expanding hydrogen generation capabilities that support the global transition to a sustainable future. The company's name has since been changed to Accelera. A separate brand that unites all the company's environmental developments. It focuses on hydrogen technologies, battery systems, electric powertrains and energy management software, contributing to the global transition to carbon-free solutions.
Using the Destination Zero strategy, the company does not just declare its intentions, but builds a real path to minimize CO₂ emissions in transportation and industry. In this direction, Cummins is actively developing cooperation with Blue Bird, one of the leading school bus manufacturers. Thanks to the introduction of hydrogen fuel cells, Blue Bird's latest buses not only reduce emissions but also provide longer mileage, making them a promising solution for future urban transportation.
One of the company's strategic directions is also the development of HyStat™ electrolyzers based on PEM technology. These are highly efficient systems for the production of pure hydrogen, characterized by their compact size and high performance. Their applications include industry, transportation and renewable energy systems, making them a key element in the development of the hydrogen economy.
Cummins, actively developing all of these areas, is already achieving significant results in expanding the scale of hydrogen energy. Of particular importance is the opening of new production facilities, including a new plant in Germany specializing in the production of fuel cell systems for hydrogen technologies. This is another step towards providing clean energy for transportation and industry. In partnership with Sinopec Group, the company opened a plant in Foshan, China, which produces electrolyzers with a capacity of 500 MW per year, with the prospect of increasing to 1 GW. In addition, the opening of Europe's largest electrolyser plant in Guadalajara, Spain, underscores Cummins' commitment to making green energy more affordable.
Through active research and implementation of advanced technologies, Cummins is not just changing the energy landscape - it is shaping the future of the global hydrogen economy.
