The Future of Data Centers: How Vertiv PowerNexus Fuels the Artificial Intelligence Revolution

In today's world, where digital technologies permeate every aspect of our lives, the role of data centers (DCs) is becoming increasingly critical. These vast "digital factories" are the heart of the internet, cloud services, streaming platforms, and, most importantly, the rapidly growing field of artificial intelligence. They demand colossal computing power, which in turn requires an incredible amount of energy and efficient cooling. It is in this context that innovations emerge, capable of completely changing the approach to creating and operating DCs, and one such leading development is Vertiv PowerNexus.

PowerNexus: Reimagining Power Infrastructure

Traditional data centers require the allocation of additional space for technical rooms where engineering equipment is located, which is not directly used for computing purposes. Vertiv PowerNexus fundamentally changes this approach. It is not just a set of individual components, but an integrated solution that combines key elements of the power infrastructure – powerful Vertiv Trinergy™ uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems and PowerBoard Switchgear – into a single, compact, and fully assembled unit.
Thanks to its integrated design, PowerNexus can free up to 30% of the space traditionally allocated to auxiliary equipment, transforming it into valuable areas for housing servers and other revenue-generating IT equipment. Secondly, it significantly accelerates deployment. Instead of assembling and integrating complex electrical systems on-site, PowerNexus is delivered fully assembled, tested, and ready for connection. This can reduce installation time by up to 50% compared to traditional approaches, which is critically important for companies striving to instantly scale their digital capabilities. And, of course, all these advantages translate into a substantial reduction in overall costs – lower labor expenses, fewer materials, and significant simplification of logistics and on-site installation. Vertiv PowerNexus greatly simplifies working with complex power infrastructure, eliminating the need for large-scale installation work thanks to factory-integrated connections and centralized monitoring.

The AI Revolution and its Insatiable Energy Appetites: Vertiv PowerNexus in Action with NVIDIA SuperPODs

The true innovation of Vertiv PowerNexus is revealed when it comes to powering the most demanding and advanced technologies – particularly in the field of artificial intelligence. Modern AI systems, such as neural networks and large-scale language models, require unprecedented computing power. This leads to the emergence of new classes of infrastructure that demand not only vast amounts of energy but also exceptionally efficient cooling to dissipate the heat generated by high-performance chips.
A striking example of such integration is Vertiv's partnership with NVIDIA, particularly in the development of 1.2 MW NVIDIA Blackwell DGX SuperPODs. This is not just a set of servers; it is a complete, pre-assembled, and optimized data center specifically designed to power one of the world's most powerful AI platforms – the NVIDIA DGX GB200 NVL72 SuperPod.
Imagine the scale: this solution is designed to support a 1.2-megawatt IT load, distributed across 18 racks, with 8 main racks each generating 132 kW! This is an energy consumption level comparable to a small city, but concentrated in a limited area to power a digital "brain" that learns and performs complex AI tasks.
Vertiv PowerNexus is the central element ensuring reliable and stable power for these incredible computing capacities. However, in addition to power, cooling is of immense importance. AI processor systems operating with such intensity generate a colossal amount of heat. To effectively manage this heat, the NVIDIA SuperPODs solution uses a hybrid approach: 76% of the cooling is liquid-based (direct-to-chip cooling) using the Vertiv XDU1350 coolant distribution unit, which allows heat to be drawn directly from the hottest components. The remaining 24% of the heat is removed by air using perimeter modular fan walls with chilled water.

The Future Unfolding Today

This partnership between Vertiv and NVIDIA underscores a key trend in DC development: the shift towards fully prefabricated and modular solutions. This approach significantly reduces the complexity of on-site deployment and commissioning, as most of the work is done at the factory. The ability to use ready-made units allows for the rapid repurposing of existing facilities or the creation of new DCs with incredible speed.
Liquid cooling, working in conjunction with air cooling, efficiently distributes the load, removing all heat from the servers, which is vital for maintaining the optimal operation of high-performance AI systems. Thus, Vertiv PowerNexus is not just a technological solution; it is a strategic step towards creating more efficient, scalable, and sustainable data centers that can meet the insatiable appetite of artificial intelligence for computing resources and accelerate the next wave of the technological revolution. This demonstrates how integrated engineering solutions are becoming the foundation for a future that is unfolding today.

AI load in data centers: new aspects of uninterruptible power supply system development

The introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms significantly changes the energy consumption profile in data centers. Unlike traditional computing processes, AI loads are characterized by high amplitude transients (instantaneous jumps in electrical current parameters): energy consumption can vary from 10% to 130% in milliseconds. Such impulse loads pose risks to the frequency stability and thermal state of power electronics.
