Flexibility vs Brand
In spring 2022, we were tasked by the client to create a redundant site capable of supporting all IT services to ensure continuity. Among the specific requirements were camouflage, compliance with state construction and fire safety standards, and ISO 9001 certification.
The first mobile data center in Ukraine
The project, quite complex even in peaceful times, truly tested our project management skills to the fullest amidst wartime conditions.
Right from the start, we had to present three concepts to the client instead of one, to assist them in deciding on implementation options. Among the proposed solutions were standardized offerings from global manufacturers and our own development—a mobile modular data center, the structure of which we manufacture locally in Ukraine.
In favor of solutions from global manufacturers, as always, the mutual compatibility of components and reliability played a crucial role, as promised by renowned brands.
However, we recommended our custom solution because we understood that solving this client's challenge with a standard offering wouldn't suffice. At Compass Engineering's data center, we are prepared to work with non-standard dimensions, juggle components, and modify their form factors as needed.
As a result, the client receives a solution that is assembled like a construction set on-site, precisely tailored to size requirements, and designed comprehensively, including structural, engineering, and IT infrastructure aspects.
A truly mobile data center
Thus began the quest to assemble a mobile data center (MDC) under conditions of a) air raids, b) blackouts, and c) supply disruptions, even for basic materials like metal. Our project management skills honed during the 2020-21 lockdowns proved invaluable. We worked around the clock, fueled by a commitment to national defense and a determination to contribute directly to enhancing our country's resilience.
Beyond the satisfaction of contributing to a project of national importance, we added our first truly mobile data center to our portfolio. Colleagues know that "mobile" often means weeks of preparation before transportation. In this case, the MDC is situated on a mobile platform, minimizing setup time before relocation.
After stress-testing our project team's endurance, we rigorously tested the MDC for reliability. Compass Engineering developed testing methodologies and comprehensive testing programs. Seventy-two hours of continuous operation under simulated full load allowed us to evaluate design quality and integration thoroughly. Following staff training, we confidently provided the client with a 10-year warranty on the facility.
Results
Implementation of the entire project from the moment of task setting to readiness for operation took three months, despite complications in logistics during the military situation.
The client received a backup data center with maximum fault tolerance, capable of supporting all IT services at any moment.
The professionalism of the Compass Engineering team and the speed of project implementation in today's challenging realities were highly appreciated by the client.
